Forum Software Upgrade\New Forums [Merged Thread]

Postby TeMerc » Fri Jan 25, 2008 1:09 am

Ok kids I'm going to attempt to upgrade the phpBB forum software to the latest 3.0 this weekend, probably Friday. I'm very excited on this upgrade as it's going to give everyone, admin down to regular users some exciting new features.

Here is a list, some of which I'm unsure exactly how to use:
  • URL Link Redirect Forums
  • Sub forums
  • Last Post
  • Display Active Topics
  • Subscribe to Forums
  • Subscribe to Topics
  • Bookmark Topics
  • Topic Sorting:
    • Sort by Author, Selectable Post Time, Replies, Subject and Views in descending or ascending order
  • Post Sorting:
    • Sort by Author, Selectable Post Time, and Subject in descending or ascending order
  • Topic Participation Tracking
  • Print Topics
  • E-mail Topics
These are just some as I'm sure I'll find some more

Wishing you good luck.
On our Forum (which was heavy modded) it gave not to much trouble.

Looks like the forum conversion is about done.

I need to give credit to Steven for this work as I was pre-occupied with my son and could not sit here to complete things.

He is also tweaking some things.

I'll start a new thread for bugs.

Thanks Steven!! t*u

I got two notifications for this subject...

One from temercsite@cox.net, and the other from temerc_board@ it-mate.co.uk

Steve, were you testing the site on your server?

I like the layout of the new forum!

I wonder if you can do the same thing as you did before... putting the last post on the top. It seemed to work out great, especially with the HJT logs and announcements.

Not quite .......... the it-mate.co.uk address was used as a temp server address whilst installing phpBB3 then converting phpBB2 :) ....... I've changed it back to what it was previously now :)

Yes you can, go to your 'User Control Panel', select 'Board Preferences', then 'Display Options' and set the 'Display post order' to 'Descending'. Save and you're done.

OK I will do that, but I was wondering if you can set it up that way, for people not logging in or are not members, they can see the latest post first...

I can change the defaults settings but I got a fair amount of flak when I did it first off, so now that users can do it themselves, it ought to make everyone happy. so they'll either have to log in to retain their settings or live with it as it usually is in most forums.

Can't win, can I?

First of all this site is not like everyone else...

Second, because you post so much news, it only makes sense to have the current news at the top, because when they visit the topic, it will the first thing they see.

I believe we went through this before and I still believe it still makes sense.

I've added a couple of options in the UCP, under 'Profile':
  • Gender selection - obvious...for most
  • expertise - your pc specialty
  • experience - your level of experience [;]
  • pc time - how much time you spend online
What do you think?

I've re-organized the order of some forums. Next up will be to create some sub-forums but this will take some thought. [;]

There is now a new option for searching for new posts, called 'View active topics'. I'm unsure exactly what the parameters are for it, but it brings up the threads which have been posted to frequently since your last visit.

It can be found in the upper left hand side of the forum.
