AV Scanner woes

Postby John Hebard » Mon Mar 16, 2009 11:03 pm

A friend of mine just had a new hard disk drive installed on his Dell Dimension 2100. Upon returning it to service, I installed Avast HE4 as his only AV security software. Thereafter, the microprocessor became ridiculously sluggish. The simplest tasks (like clicking on start) would take up to 20 seconds before opening to the next window. I recently uninstalled Avast and the machine's speed improved substantially. The resident scanners apparently were just too much for the 2100.

I still want to install AV software that will afford reasonable protection ( he goes online infrequently and visits only a handful of reliable sites ) but without the side effects of sluggish performance. Any suggestions? AVG? Mbam?

Funny thing, this new Avast version has a few MBAM users in help desk complaining that MBAM was suddenly slow. Disable Avast and things improved vastly. I knew there was a reason I've been ignoring that 'new version' alert from my Avast. rofl

My personal recommendation;

Avira + MBAM + ClamWin

ClamWin doesn't have a realtime scanner, but is great for scheduled scans and on-demand scans (it's an absolute must have) - just don't set it to auto-remove or quarantine what it finds - have it report them instead;

Hi
I've also seen this on the PC Tools forum related to Spyware Doctor, so not just an isolated issue.
