Similar problem again!

Postby now0now » Tue Nov 09, 2010 7:13 pm

Hello Again,

I seem to have again aquired a similar malware problem as I had in my last topic, windows will only start in safe mode, sometimes even then I will not be able to see any icons or do anything. I ran ComboFix, know I shoudn't have done that without consulting some one but . . . Combofix started to run but then didn't do anything.

Anyway here is the Hijackthis log:

Thanks, please download Malwarebytes via the link below from one of our trusted download sites(all downloads and set up files are the Free version, registration activates PRO features:
http://malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php

Note: Ignore all 'Recommended' or 'Sponsored' software which is prominently displayed, they are ads and we do not have any association with them.

Save the file to your desktop then double-click it to begin installation.

Follow the prompts to install, update then select 'quick scan' option.

The paste in the log results.

Lets also collect some more info off the system to see if we can spot additional offending files.

Download RSIT from the link below and save it to your desktop.
32bit:
http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe
64bit:
http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSITx64.exe

Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open.

Please attach the contents of LOG.txt (<<will be maximized-displayed on desktop)
***DO NOT SEND INFO.TXT... if I need it I will ask specifically for it.***

OK, thanks.

Lets run ComboFix from link below:
http://tinyurl.com/ycc4ls4

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi,
The URL for Combofix above gave me a 404 error. Is there another one I should use?

I am still having problems running Combofix. I saved it to the desktop, when I open it, the program initalizes and I get the user agreement, but after I agree nothing happens (I left it alone for quite a while, it doesn't seem to be doing anything.) !?

Let it set for a couple of hours, then abort, check for the combofix.txt log, if not there rescan system again.

Safe mode can be utilized if needed too

OK, I ran Combofix again, left it alone for a couple hours. When I tried to look for any results, the system was sort of locked up, I could not open any programs, etc. I restarted and looked for the combofix.txt log, but it's not there. BTW this is all in safe mode, Windows will not start up at all in normal mode. I tried combofix again, and got the same result.

Anything else I should try? Thanks for your help, sorry this is kind of tricky . . .

Thanks.

Please download GMER from the link below and save it to your desktop
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Physically disconnect from Net by pulling out the cable from the machine & shut down all anti-virus and anti-spyware apps to prevent conflicts.
Disable as many applications as possible, this will give us less chance of false positives in log.

To run GMER:
*Double click gmer.exe to run it.
*Allow driver to install if asked (gmer.sys)
*You may get a warning at program start that there is possible rootkit activity and do you want to run scan.
*Say OK to run scan.
*If no warning, just click "scan".
*Let the scan finish.
*Once done press "save" and please be sure you use the OEM provided Notepad and give the log a name and save it to your desktop
Press save
Reconnect to the Net and send log.

I ran TDSSKiller, it found one rootkit and deleted it. Windows now starts in normal mode, which was the main problem, and everything seems to be running fine. Thanks! Should I run more scans to be sure?

Hi, Combofix ran through the whole scan this time, but then hung up when it was generating the log (I left it all day). I then had to restart, it did generate a log but this was all that it contained:

ComboFix 10-11-17.03 - Administrator 11/17/2010 7:32:16.2.2 - x86
Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.1015.598 [GMT -5:00]
Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\ComboFix.exe
AV: Symantec Endpoint Protection *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {FB06448E-52B8-493A-90F3-E43226D3305C}
FW: Symantec Endpoint Protection *disabled* {BE898FE3-CD0B-4014-85A9-03DB9923DDB6}
.

It did say that it deleted some files while it was running. Should I run it again? System is still running fine.

Thanks for the log.

Please open Notepad then copy & paste all the following text located inside the code box.

Code: Select all

File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\qwttch.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\flqwc.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\crnwrtgu.sys

Drivers::
ygqofxp
umtxylie
dsdmgruj

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe
Drag the .txt file into combofix.exe as displayed in this .gif image:
Image
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply

Another thing: after running the above scan, I reactivated my Symantec anti-virus and backed up my system. During the backup Symantec found Backdoor.Tidserv.I!inf infecting the file pci.sys.vir (The infected file was not backed up, the backup software caught it). Reading about backdoor stuff it looks like these are very difficult to remove completely, so I am thinking of reformatting and reinstalling just to be safe. What would you suggest regarding this? Thanks again for all your help?

Ignore that, it was already renamed by some other security tool, hence the .vir extension.

However, th ComboFix script may not have run, so let's double check that.

Download The Avenger file from the link below and save it to your desktop:
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/avenger2/download.php

1- Unzip/extract the avenger.exe from that zip file to your desktop.
2- Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
3- Click OK.
4- Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to 'Automatically disable any rootkits found' does not have a tick in it.
5- Copy ALL of the text below by highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl+C.

Code: Select all

Files to delete:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\qwttch.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\flqwc.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\crnwrtgu.sys

Drivers to delete:
ygqofxp
umtxylie
dsdmgruj

6- In the Avenger text window, click the Paste Script from Clipboard, button.
7- Click the Execute button.
8- You will be asked "Are you sure you want to execute the current script"
9- Click Yes.
10- You will now be told, 'First step completed --- The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?'
11- Click Yes.
12- Your PC will now be rebooted.

*Note: If the above script contains Drivers to delete: or Drivers to disable:, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
If that is the case, it will force a BSOD on the first reboot. This is normal & expected behavior.
After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, then the log can be found at %systemdrive%\avenger.txt (typically C:\avenger.txt).
Please paste this scan log into your next reply. Even if you experience errors with the program, please check for the log in the above mentioned location.

That looks good, nice work, we're all done here. The system is clean. To delete all third party tools, related files and folders as well as logs generated, please download OTListIt2 from the link below:
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe
Save the file to your desktop.
Once on the desktop double click OTListit.exe and the application will open.
Then click the 'Clean Up' button

And for additional avoidance and prevention, here are some things I recommend aside from having antivirus, antimalware and a good third party, bi-directional firewall:
NEVER open any unknown emails
NEVER use P2P file sharing sites
NEVER install anything that just 'pops' up
NEVER use cracked or warez\pirated software
NEVER click links from IM contacts before authenticating

And:
ALWAYS keep Windows updated
ALWAYS update software before scanning with any security tool
ALWAYS use Google to research new software before installing.
ALWAYS use caution on all socail networking sites, none of them fully vet all those 'free' games and downloads.

And either of the two following hosts file databases will keep an even stronger layer of defense:
* MVPS Hosts
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
*hpHosts
http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download

To manage your hosts file we recommend using either HostsMan or HostsXpert. With either tool you can download the latest updates, merge them with another hosts file, edit entries and much more. It's freeware and works very well on all systems
HostsXpert:
http://www.funkytoad.com/content/view/13/31/

HostsMan(W7 & 64bit systems:
http://www.abelhadigital.com/

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
Calendar of Updates

Happy surfing!!
