My XP Puter No Longer Auto Updates after cleaning...Why??

Postby Nala » Fri May 13, 2011 9:41 pm

Hey all,

Another problem and I can't figure this one out at all.

I have an old desktop that never gives me trouble. I only use it for browsing the web, no email, no documents, no nothing other than the web. About 2 weeks ago I see something very strange on my desktop. It tells me that Windows XP Virus or something similar needs updating. I click on it to see what's going on and it is trying to charge me to update and it does one of these fake scans and tells me that there are dozens of THREATS that need to be removed. It is obviously a malware or virus or something. I don't have a clue as to how it got on there, it really has me stumped. I am VERY careful because I have been hammered on more than 1 occasion and had to come here for help to get my laptop back in running order.

I have several protection programs on there like Avast, Ad Aware, Defender and so on. The first thing I use is AdAware and it finds 15 or so problems and I have it fix them and the problem goes away. I do a scan with Avast and it comes up clean. My machine is back to running as usual, no problems at all that I can detect.

Well yesterday I notice in my system tray that there is one of the RED SHIELDS and a bubble comes up and tells me that Windows Automatic Update is NOT turned on and that it recommends me to turn it on. I also see some kind of notification on the Windows Defender Icon right next to the RED SHIELD. I click on it and open Defender and click on the box to UPDATE Defender. I immediately get a message that tells me that Defender CANNOT update. I try it several times with the same conclusion even after a reboot. I then go into the Windows Security Center to turn ON Auto Updating and I get a message telling me that Windows cannot turn on Auto Updates and that I should go do it through the Control Panel. Well I did that and rebooted thinking that would solve the problem, it didn't. I get the same notification and RED SHIELD in the the system tray. I go to the Windows Update website and try to update and it tells me there is an error. I am not able to update Windows online or through my Control Panel. Everything else is running fine and I haven't seen any false scans, erroneous messages, demands for payments or anything.

I am running every scan software I have now to see what comes up. I haven't ran HJT yet as I wanted to get some ideas os to what it might be that's causing the problems. I will post a log if you all think I need to. I'll report back tomorrow as to the results of all my scans.

Are there any other programs or online scans that you all can recommend that I might have missed?

Do you have any idea what may be causing this problem where I can't update Windows XP or Defender? I even uninstalled Defender and re-installed it and it still won't update. Weird.

Help if you can.

Thanks again for everything.

Welcome back. This is one of the many rogues making the rounds.

Download RSIT from the link below and save it to your desktop.
32bit:
http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe
64bit:
http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSITx64.exe

You may have to change the name, change it to winlogon.exe
Double click on the file to run it.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please allow the download of Trend Micro's HijackThis to collect additional information not included in the default RSIT output.
Once it has finished, two logs will open.

Please paste the contents of LOG.txt (<<will be maximized-displayed on desktop)

***PLEASE DO NOT SEND INFO.TXT... if I need it I will ask specifically for it.***

Ok, ignore all cookies found, they're not threats

Nothing out of the ordinary in the RSIT results

Thanks again for your help, I appreciate it.

I scanned it with everything I have and it comes up clean for threats. There were cookies, but I ignored them.

The problem I can't figure out is why I am still not able to update XP through the AutoUpdate feature or on the Windows Update website. Neither one works. The problem with Defender is also still there and it also won't update. Other than those nagging problems my machine is running fine.

Any advice?

Thanks

I scanned it with everything I have and it comes up clean for threats. There were cookies, but I ignored them.

The problem I can't figure out is why I am still not able to update XP through the AutoUpdate feature or on the Windows Update website. Neither one works. The problem with Defender is also still there and it also won't update. Other than those nagging problems my machine is running fine.

Any advice?

Thanks

I should have asked this before, what is the specific error you're getting at Windows update?

When I boot I get a small RED SHIELD in the system tray next to the clock with a bubble message telling me that my computer is not fully protected that Windows Auto Update is NOT TURNED ON and to click in the box to fix it. I click the box and the Windows Security Options box opens up where it shows if the Firewall is turned on or off, the antivirus is on or off and the Auto Update is on or off. Auto Update is OFF and I select the option to turn it on and I get a message telling me that it can't be turned on this way and that to turn on Auto Updates I need to go into the Control Panel and select Auto Update and turn it on from there. I do this and it allows me to turn it on, which I do, and set it to update every day at midnight. Even though I do this it won't update at midnight or any other time. If I reboot I will still get the RED SHIELD giving me the warning message I listed above.
I then tried to go to the windows Update website and try that. When it goes through its loading process I will get a message telling me there was an error and lists a code like 0x305546373 (example, NOT the real error code) and that it can't update.

So there is no way I have found to get my machine to update itself like it used to before that Win AntiVirus problem I had a couple weeks ago.

The Windows Defender also won't update, when I click on it to update it tells me that Defender is unable to update.

Both of these problems started at the same time as far as I can tell.

Thanks again for your time and help.

Try running Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix

Works great usually on XP systems which have issues with Windows updates in general
