Silence is golden!

Postby Spudz » Sun Feb 24, 2013 12:35 pm

I know they say 'Silence is Golden' but it does have the adverse effect of turning a person insane ;)

This post should break that silence and hopefully get some activity going ;)

Know what it means is not the same as knowing where it came from. Do believe it was a wise parent, after a long hard day of working, looking at that peaceful sleeping baby (infant), and the silence was so pleasing to the ears, that the expression was given birth. That's what I think and I'm sticking to it, Mindblower! ;)

Hehe.

The origin of the phrase in English is from 1831. The poet, Thomas Carlyle, used it in his translation of the German poem, Sartor Resartus . He wrote, "As the Swiss Inscription says: Sprecfien ist silbern, Schweigen ist golden (Speech is silvern, Silence is golden); or as I might rather express it: Speech is of Time, Silence is of Eternity." This is at the end of a long speech given by a character that talks about the virtues of silence.

Still, a great quote that covers so much :)
