I'm in love .... with a program?

Postby MysteryFCM » Thu Nov 24, 2005 6:25 am

Found this via Scott William' (Freeware Arena) blog and am now in love with it :?

Screamer Radio
http://www.screamer-radio.com

Desc: There is little reason to listen to commercial FM radio anymore, it is an old medium that provides little choice of music and is saturated with ads. For the last couple of years there has been an alternative, streaming internet radio. An alternative that has been somewhat complicated to use.

Screamer Radio attempts to remedy this problem by bringing most of the required steps into a single, easy to use, freeware program.

FL: http://freeware.it-mate.co.uk/?Cat=Multimedia#163

I'm currently using the latest development release and am listening to a chillout station called "Scotland Chat" (found via icecast.org). Tried a few of the presets and whilst they worked, they weren't really to my taste.

As cool as some of these online radio show\stream casts are, I can't get over the sound quality of things coming from a PC. Mind you, I have a nice setup on my box(Altec Lansing), sub woofer and all, but it pales in comparison to the home system, which is a low level surround sound(Denon, Definitive Technologies), perhaps $3500 invested.

Just an FYI regarding the favourites feature of Screamer Radio. I finally found out how to get it working (sorry it's taken so long for me to post this).

Below is a copy of my favourites for this application, and shows how it should be formatted.

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" standalone="yes"?>
<Screamer version="Screamer Radio Favorites">
<Group title="Chillout">
   <Station title="ScotlandChat.co.uk - Free Chat Site" url="http://www.scotlandchat.co.uk/">

   </Station>
</Group>
<Group title="Rock">

Hi MysteryCFM,

I first ran into Screamer in April of 2005 at Buzzy's Stall Wall, a small freeware site. Like you, I grew quite fond of it.

The favorites have always been a problem, but if you like recording songs it's a much cleaner solution than WinAmp and uses far less system resources.

Your review is excellent. Did you see that it can be set up on a timed recording schedule, using a script someone wrote?

http://freewarewiki.pbwiki.com/ScreamerRadio

That would be a nice feature to have built in.

Clif,
Thankyou ... hope you're having a good Christmas :)

I noticed the script on your review, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

February 6th, 2006

Finally, a new version of Screamer Radio! This time you'll be able to add favorites more easily! Bugfixes, improvements, support for MSN Messenger "What I'm Listening To"-feature, and a new version of BASS with support for AAC streams is also included!

You may also have noticed that the presets have been considerably updated in your old version too! This is thanks to a new online database that is a lot easier to maintain, expect the database to grow bigger and better from here on!

Also, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ludwik that has helped me populate the database with a lot of interesting radio stations. And finally, thanks everyone who has donated money! Every cent is appreciated! :)

Well, what are you waiting for? Head on to the download now!

Thanks a lot, David! :D

Had my first Screamer crash on the previous build. Here's the URL I'm listening to now. http://www.di.fm/mp3/goapsy.pls

Wife can't stand it long. LOL
She likes Christian Rock. I do too of course, but I play trance music while I'm at work most of the time. Today I was listening to some old Classic rock though. Had Bruce Springsteen running thru my head most of the day.
