Well, I've seemingly lost the plot again as I've just installed Ubuntu on my laptop using the "Wubi" installer - which annoys me greatly for two specific reasons;

1. It has to download the Ubuntu files (600MB+) before it can do anything
2. Whilst claiming to be an installer, and finishing fairly quickly (little over 45 mins or so), I then had to wait another hour for Ubuntu itself to install, setup and configure itself after Wubi re-booted the computer ......... shouldn't Wubi have already done this? thus saving Ubuntu having to do it?

Finally, I had 17GB spare space on my data partition, which I installed Ubuntu onto, and it now has only 6GB free ?>! .... and even more annoyingly, I can't see the rest of the damn files on that partition, when in Ubuntu (can only view them when booting back into Windows).

On the plus side however, even though my laptop is fairly old and slow (550Mhz, 320MB Ram), it installed Ubuntu 8.04, and this seems extremely fast compared to older versions. Even better though, is that I was able to ditch Firefox in favour of Opera in under 15 mins 1rokon

Back into Windows now though as I needed access to e-mail and whatnot, but stay tuned ....... if I can find a way of accessing the rest of the files on the partition (the partition editor seems to be missing for some reason - it's not in the usual menu'), then I may keep it installed (otherwise it's not gonna be of much use).

I grabbed "MobaLiveCD" from (I think) cliff's newsletter, and am beginning to think there's a conspiracy as I've tried getting it to load a multitude of LiveCD's from Austrumi (1.8.0) to Helix to Ubuntu to varying others, and the result is the same regardless - it just err ...... freezes (sits there doing bugger all)

/edit

Yep, it was Cliffs newsletter :)

I am happy to announce, although it took it > 10 mins to load, I finally got Moba to successfully load the latest Damn Small Linux ISO (Grub, haven't tried SYS). Although one problem immediately springs to mind - I can't resize the window, meaning I've either got to see some of it or err, some of it ....... I can't size it to full/partial screen.

Moba devs need to sort this out as the ability to resize the distro to the same as the Moba QEMU window, is a necessity.

One more problem, though it may be because of my machine more than anything else - I can't get Firefox to load in < 15 mins (the time I waited before I finally gave up).

The machine I've been using to test this, is my now ancient and dying laptop (CD drive is dead, HDD is dying, RAM needs replaced, screen holder needs replaced);

Intel Pentium II 550Mhz
320MB SD Ram
60GB HDD
XP Pro Service Pack 2

I hear what you are saying... Times are tough all over. Even here in Las Vegas which, just a few months ago, they were saying that we are recession proof. Now, we just heard that the Sands Corporation, which owns two major casinos on the strip are laying off people http://www.lasvegasnow.com/Global/story.asp?S=9512429

Other casinos have been laying off also... just more quietly.

Now, we have the second highest foreclosure rate in the nation. http://www.lasvegasnow.com/Global/story.asp?S=9513721

If it keeps going like this, we will all have to move in with Tom. hm? >>< ><:

That is very true. Because Tom wears the pants in the family, it should not be a problem with the wife.

That'd be one way for me to afford to pay the mortgage. And maybe get some extra goodies from Santa.
