Yes, this last few weeks have been very slow, and the monthly stats reflect that.

Great News is to stop being freeware apparently :(

It's undecided yet. If it's released as of now it will be about $30. Or it may be a free lite version and higher priced pro version. Personally I like just to have one version that does it all, but some users are probably not interested in offline reading, archiving, pod-casting etc.

... and yes I'm terribly late with this;

Ver 1.0 (Build 370) released on 6/25/2006
=========================================
-Changed: GreatNews will not show system tray popup when there's only failed channel updates.
-Fixed: GreatNews chokes on invalid date format (Thanks Le_Catalan)
-Fixed: Script debugger comes up when GreatNews start page is configured to show most visited feeds (Thanks Steven Burn)
+Added: Arabic language pack (Thanks Abdulaziz Althnyan)
+Added: Basque language pack (Thanks Joseba Kamio)
+Updated: Franch language pack (Thanks NicoTrad)
+Updated: Italian language pack (Thanks Scirè Salvatore)
+Updated: German language pack (Thanks Sven Fischer)

GreatNews RSS Feedreader Screencast
As I mentioned a few days ago, I conducted an evaluation of GreatNews, and the result has been to make this a recommended feedreader for RSS. On my internal RSS site I have been promoting FeedDemon, but it is hard to argue with the features and free cost of GreatNews. Yesterday, I created a screencast that helps one get through the basics including such items as initial download, configuration and usage. Hope you find the tutorials helpful.

I uploaded a halfway-done build 376. I thought people using FF2 or IE7 might find the changes useful:

+Added: Middle-click a feed in the tree will open its website in a new tab
+Added: FireFox 2.0 RSS subscription support
+Changed: GreatNews style files to utilize IE7 new css support. (most noticably, images on the newspaper will scale to fit)

Build 378

This build has no new feature. But all libraries were upgraded to latest versions, and the GreatNews code base was migrated to VC++ 2005. Hopefully this upgrade addressed some stabilities issues we have seen in the last several builds.

Please give this build a try and report any issues back to me. Thanks!

Steven is there a way for me to access GN from my Vista drive, with the same feeds? ?>!

I think a while back I had asked about access from diff user accounts, but this is a bit different.

Thanks.

Yep, just navigate to the GN folder and load it (feeds are stored in the same dir, so it doesn't matter which OS you are in).

hehe one of GN's best points is that it could actually be stored on a flash drive if necessary as it's "portable friendly" :)

GreatNews goes open source

Great News, my favourite RSS reader for the past few years, is going open source folks!.

I have to say I haven’t spent a lot of time on GreatNews lately. Save the usual excuses, the most important thing is how to keep GreatNews updated regularly. I’m considering what’s the best way to release GreatNews source code. Most of the code base are safe to open, but there are small amount of code belong to other people that I have to either ask for permission, or compile into library. I will try to finalize this in the Christmas break. In the mean while, let me know your thoughts!

Thanks for your support of GreatNews. I hope you will continue enjoying it.
