vURL Desktop Edition

Postby MysteryFCM » Sun Jul 09, 2006 6:57 pm

What is "vURL Desktop Edition"?

vURL Desktop Edition (vURL DE) is the desktop version of the extremely popular vURL service that we've been running for quite some time now.

This application has been developed solely to provide those that like our service, an alternate method of doing such. This edition also helps to save on my own server costs as it is entirely standalone*, requiring only your own internet connection.

vURL Desktop Edition currently allows you to get and save the source code of any website you fancy with the click of a button, and additionally, see a list of files it currently links to.

As with the online version of the vURL service, this application is and will remain, completely free for both personal and business use.

* See System Requirements for details

Screenshot: http://support.it-mate.co.uk/images/pro ... vurlde.gif

Download*: http://support.it-mate.co.uk/?mode=Prod ... topedition

* Basic package recommended

System requirements (updated: 25/09/06)

NOTE: These are MINIMUM recommendations ONLY and should be taken as a guide only.

1. VB6 Runtime files (SP5)
2. Windows 98 Second Edition
3. CDO (Collaborative Data Objects)*
4. MS Script Control**

* E-mail facility uses CDO (Collaborative Data Objects) so is only available to Windows 2000 or above.

** Only required for the Javascript decoding facility

Whats new in 0.0.3?

Added: Images detection
Added: hpHosts Online lookup
Added: SiteAdvisor lookup
Added: Save/print links found
Added: Command line support
Added: Copy webpage source code to clipboard
Added: Disable application logs
Added: Detection, highlighting and notification of META REFRESH usage (see notes)

Fixed: Address box position when resizing
Fixed: Font used for title not always detected, even when present

Modified: Improved link detection
Modified: Content extraction routine
Modified: Temporary file naming convention
Modified: Source code print routine

Notes:

In order to aid those viewing phishing or other malicious websites, support has been added for the detection of the META REFRESH tag. This tag is frequently used by malicious persons, to redirect the user to a page other than the page the user intended to go to (i.e. a phishing website). When detected, a notification will be displayed to the user, and the tag highlighted in bold red.

0.0.4 released

Updates:

Added: E-mail facilities
Added: Display net-block information

Removed: Microsoft XML dependancy

Updates planned:

1. Add decoding for Base64 encoded HTML
2. Add decoding for encoded javascript
3. New logo and icons
4. "Check for new version" utility

Suggestions/contributions welcome

Notes:

Please be advised, to save problems the net-block information passes the domain name to a special page on the hpHosts Online server to get the net-block information for you. Nothing other than the domain name is passed to this page.

0.0.6

Changes:

Added: Dissect this link (for links menu)

Fixed: Height error when loading program
Fixed: Antivirus causes Path/File Access Error (see notes)

Modified: Image/links list viewer

Notes:

Because of issues with antivirus applications flagging the .vuc files when they contained malicious website's source code, the temp files now use .txt. A note has been sent to one of the AC developers that I had a report about to see if we can get this resolved.

v0.1.0

Changes:

Added: Unescape Javascript (see notes)

Fixed: Minor GUI issues
Fixed: Images/links detected but not listed (see notes)

Modified: Moved Tools (Base64) to main dialog

Notes:

I'm sorry about the previous release (0.0.9), due to a major messup on my part, I broke the link and image listing. I've fixed it in this release.

With regards to the unescape Javascript addition, I did want to include functionality to decode encoded JS completely, but unfortunately couldn't get it working properly. For now, all it can do is unescape escaped strings such as;

%3C%73%63%72%69%70%74%20%6C%61%6E%67%75%61%67%65%3D%22%6A%61%76%61%73%63%72%69%70%74%22%3E%0D%0A%64%6F%63%75%6D%65%6E%74%2E%77%72%69%74%65%28%75%6E%65%73%63%61%70%65%28%27%48%65%6C%6C%6F%2C%20%49%27%6D%20%61%6E%20%65%73%63%61%70%65%64%20%73%74%72%69%6E%67%27%29%29%3B%0D%0A%3C%2F%73%63%72%69%70%74%3E%0D%0A

Added: Potentially harmful file detection (see notes)
Added: document.location highlighting

Modified: Improved link/image detection routines

2. .pif
3. .com
4. .js
5. .bat
6. .scr
7. .dll
8. .cab
9. .mht

Version: 0.2.3

Changes:

Added: Sample User Agent strings file
Added: Full Vista detection
Added: Over-ride logging and configuration locations (see notes)

Modified: Re-written logging routines
Modified: Re-written configuration saving routines

Fixed: Path/File error when launching program from a limited account on XP or Vista
Fixed: User Agent and Referer not saved
Fixed: Minor bug when pasting URL (auto-protocol detection routine has been removed)

Notes:

I've added a routine to allow over-riding the location used for saving the logs and settings when running Vista. To use this, simply create a file called "override.txt" in the same folder as the application, and the logs and configuration, will be treated as though running on non-Vista machines (this allows running from a flash drive for example, on a Vista machine).

This is ONLY required if running on a limited account.

Changes

Added: Description for response codes when using MSXML method
Added: Method being used, to title bar

Fixed: User Agent drop down box showing log instead of UA file
Fixed: Error when antivirus deletes temporary content storage file (see notes)

Misc: Other minor modifications

Notes:

I've corrected a bug in the program that occurs when you download a malicious site's content, and the antivirus program deletes vURL DE's temporary content storage file.

Whats actually annoying is, I only noticed this as I am running Kaspersky IS on the laptop, and Kaspersky only caused the error when the program attempted to load and display the file's content - it did NOT cause an error when actually creating the file to begin with.

Version: 0.2.8

changes:

Added: Save source to file, including list of links

Fixed: IP not detected when dissecting FTP link containing @ symbol (see notes)
Fixed: Double seperator on right click when not selecting link in source window
Fixed: WhoIs info not displayed when dissecting IP instead of hostname

Modified: Updated ReadMe (Release Notes > General Information)

Misc: Other minor modifications

Notes:

Previously when dissecting FTP links, the IP was not extracted if the link contained the @ symbol, as is now commonly used by phishers.

To see an example of this, please see the two following links. The first is an example e-mail I received for an eBay phishing scam, and the second, the vURL DE results for the FTP link.
