Rangers sweep Lightning in Prague Sunday
10.05.2008 / 2:46 PM / NHL Premiere By Dan Rosen - NHL.com Staff Writer

PRAGUE, Czech Republic – As the Czech fans did the wave in the stands, the New York Rangers were sending wave after wave of rushes at the young Tampa Bay Lightning defense.

Constant pressure and constant attacking caused the Lightning to see a big blue blur Sunday at the O2 Arena. It was eerily similar to the last 50 minutes of Saturday’s game, and the score was exactly the same.

The Rangers are leaving the Czech Republic undefeated after winning the back end of the Bridgestone NHL Premiere Prague by a 2-1 margin. Wade Redden and Scott Gomez each had a goal and an assist for New York.

Rangers beat Chicago 4-2 in home opener at Garden
Brandon Dubinsky scored once and added two assists, and newcomers Wade Redden, Aaron Voros and Nikolai Zherdev chipped in with goals, too, leading the New York Rangers to a 4-2 victory over the vastly improved Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night.

Fresh off last weekend's season-opening sweep of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Czech Republic, the Rangers showed no signs of jet lag in winning their home opener and starting 3-0 for the first time since 1989.

Redden, the Rangers' biggest offseason addition on defense, gave New York a 1-0 lead 6:47 in. But later in the first period, Chicago's Brian Campbell - who netted the biggest deal for a free-agent defenseman during the summer - turned an end-to-end rush into a goal for reigning NHL rookie of the year Patrick Kane.

Rangers Continue winning -Rangers 4, Flyers 3
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -The Rangers traveled around the globe looking for wins like a politician stumping for votes. The Czech Republic, New York and, now, Philadelphia.

No matter the locale, the Rangers are perfect and off to their best start in 25 years.

Even Sarah Palin would like a run like this.

Nikolai Zherdev scored the first of four first-period goals, and the New York Rangers remained unbeaten with a 4-3 victory to spoil the Philadelphia Flyers' opener on Saturday night.

"We've won every way," said Rangers center Scott Gomez. "We've won with special teams. We've won on the road. We've held the lead. We've come from behind. Were learning how to win."

Rangers Make it 5-for-5, rout Devils 4-1 at MSG

By Jim Cerny, newyorkrangers.com

Ranger fans witnessed something Monday night at Madison Square Garden that had taken place only one other time in the club’s long history. In defeating the New Jersey Devils 4-1, the Rangers won their fifth consecutive game to open up the season, equaling the 1983-84 squad for the best start in franchise history.

Brandon Dubinsky and Wade Redden celebrate Dubinsky's first-period goal, which gave the Blueshirts an early 1-0 lead in Monday's victory over New Jersey.

Aaron Voros recorded the first two-goal and first three-point game of his NHL career, while also scoring the first two power play goals of his career. Voros’ linemate, Brandon Dubinsky, added a goal and two assists for his second three-point game already this season; while defenseman Dan Girardi notched his second consecutive two-point game for the Blueshirts.

The Rangers will try to establish a new franchise record for most wins at the start of the season when they go for their sixth straight on Wednesday night at MSG against the Buffalo Sabres.

Sabres bring end to Rangers' season-opening streak

ByJim Cerny, newyorkrangers.com

The capacity crowd attending Wednesday’s game at Madison Square Garden between the Rangers and Buffalo Sabres arrived hoping to see the home team accomplish something that had never been done in the history of the organization. Instead, they departed having witnessed several things that the Rangers had not done so far this season, while dropping a 3-1 decision to the Sabres.

The Rangers had hoped to establish a new franchise record by winning their sixth consecutive game to start the season. Instead the Blueshirts suffered their first defeat of 2008-09, while surrendering their first two power play goals and their first shorthanded goal of the campaign.

“It seemed like we were a bit sloppy tonight, and a good team like Buffalo will take advantage of that,” noted Rangers captain Chris Drury. “I thought we came out with good energy, but just kind of faded as the game wore on.”

Valiquette unbeatable as Rangers win in shootout

By Jim Cerny, newyorkrangers.com

Nikolai Zherdev and Fredrik Sjostrom scored in the shootout, and Stephen Valiquette denied the final shooter, Jason Blake, as the Rangers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 1-0 Friday night at Madison Square Garden.

“This was huge win because we are still a team trying to find its legs a little bit and prove ourselves in lots of different ways,” noted Rangers head coach Tom Renney. “And in games like this, you need great goaltending, and we sure got that tonight. This was a very big win.

Zherdev, the first skater in the shootout, beat Toronto goalie Vesa Toskala with a wicked forehand shot, and Sjostrom, the Blueshirts’ third shooter, banked a shot off of Toskala and just over the goal line.

“It was nice to see that go in, that’s for sure,” said Sjostrom. “It was a great game from Vali, and it was nice to win that for him.”

Re: Rangers Now 8-2-1...Shootout Victory Over Pens [Oct 26]

Rangers save best for last, topple Pens in shootoutBy Jim Cerny, newyorkrangers.com

In a thrilling comeback Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers erased a 2-0 deficit in the third period to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in the shootout, with Henrik Lundqvist denying Sidney Crosby on Pittsburgh’s final shootout attempt to secure the victory.

The Rangers, who are 8-2-1 on the season with a league-leading 17 points, increased their lead over the Penguins in the Atlantic Division to three points with the win. The loss snapped Pittsburgh’s three-game winning streak.

Paul Mara and the Rangers defense were able to contain Pittsburgh scoring threat Evgeni Malkin, who was limited to just one assist on Saturday night at MSG.
“The win was huge,” said Lundqvist, who made 27 saves on the night, plus three more stops in the shootout. “It was a big game for us, and a statement to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins because they are a good team.”

Fredrik Sjostrom scored the lone shootout goal in three attempts for the Rangers, beating Marc-Andre Fleury with a backhander from in tight, while Lundqvist denied Kris Letang, Petr Sykora, and, finally, Crosby.

“That was classic Henrik right there,” said Rangers head coach Tom Renney. “Poised and confident in the shootout.”
