View Spammers By Date?

Postby minimal » Thu May 20, 2010 4:21 pm

Hello Steven,

I'm using your Check_Spammers code w/ SMF 2RC3 and I'm a happy man.

I'd like to ask if it's possible to view the spammers by date rather than by the service that blocked them:

That would give me a rough idea of say daily or monthly activity.

I hope its the right place to ask such questions as I see that you're documenting your work online in quite a few places (support.it-mate.co.uk, forum.hosts-file.net). I didn't know where to go to post a thank-you note before, so I did it here.

Thanks heaps for your work :)

Ron

Glad you like it :)

I thought I'd actually already added that. I'll get it added to the next release for you :) (it needs a re-write anyway, hehe)

Thank you for looking into it Mr. Mystery :)

To be honest, I thought it was already implemented too and that you would point me to a different setting/edit.

A propos, observing the forum logs, I occasionally stumble upon the following message:

which points to the following line (inside Register.php):

To me it looks just like the occasional server time-out while checking for ip/email across the spam-fighter hosts. Everything seems to be working as it should, spammers get logged, counter.txt gets updated, etc.

Thanks again!

Ron

My pleasure :)

It is indeed a server timeout, likely one of the blacklists going AWOL at the time of query, or taking too long to respond.

Just an update on this,

Looks like when these timeouts occur, the registration gets completed (at least on SMF, I see them on the member-list).

No biggy if the user is genuine, but spammers may also register :(

Yet another update:

Can't figure how to troubleshoot this, updated SBST to 0.50 & SMF to 2.0RC4.

Checking registrations locally, I get timeouts but spammers do register. Redirecting checks to

Code: Select all

$fspamcheck = file_get_contents('http://temerc.com/Check_Spammers/check_spammers_plain.php?name='.$username.'&email='.$emailaddr.'&ip='.$ip);

blocks 'em cold :)

Thanks for letting me know.

When you say, redirecting checks, do you mean using the copy of the SBST hosted on the temerc.com domain? (if so, we'd need to look at what's being returned when doing queries from the copy on your server, as I suspect it could be either a server issue, or one of the blacklists telling you you've gone over the limit)

Thanks for getting back Steven :) (If you prefer to split this to another topic, by all means do so)

Yes, should have been clearer, depending on the source that SBST checks take place inside my Register.php as per your instructions, I get different results.

SBST checks done on your server:

Code: Select all

/// BEGIN SPAM MOD
   $username = $_POST['user'];
   $emailaddr = $_POST['email'];
   $ip = $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];
   // Either use the existing URL, or download a copy of the check_spammers.zip file to your server and use that instead.
   //
   // http://temerc.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=6103
   //
   $fspamcheck = file_get_contents('http://temerc.com/Check_Spammers/check_spammers_plain.php?name='.$username.'&email='.$emailaddr.'&ip='.$ip);

is working fine and dandy :)

Trying the same thing on my server:

Code: Select all

/// BEGIN SPAM MOD
   $username = $_POST['user'];
   $emailaddr = $_POST['email'];
   $ip = $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];
   // Either use the existing URL, or download a copy of the check_spammers.zip file to your server and use that instead.
   //
   // http://temerc.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=6103
   //
   $fspamcheck = file_get_contents('http://forum.BlahBlah.org/Check_Spammers/check_spammers_plain.php?name='.$username.'&email='.$emailaddr.'&ip='.$ip);

will let spammers register if a timeout occurs.

Check_Spammers directory on my server, spambots & counter.txt 755'd:

As I reported in earlier posts this has been working fine ever since I employed SBST. It just looks like timeouts result in checks being cancelled and spammers being able to proceed to registration.

I use a simple test to check if this is working: Copy/paste some random bots from the front page list of BotScout and see if they register or get the banned image.

Ahaa, that sheds some light. Wasn't aware that there's a hard limit on checks.

Cheers!

Thanks for getting back to me.

Some of the blacklists have hard limits, yes (BotScout, fSpamlist, StopForumSpam) and I believe some of the DNSBLs have something similar. To be able to track down which one is causing the timeout, you'll need to add an echo and break, after each check, removing it as a blacklist is ruled out.
