As no one would find this surprising an affiliate of Zango is using the recent death of actor Heath Ledger to push its shitware.

Mike Burgess of MVPS Hosts has found videos being offered purporting Heath in the buff. Mike also links to a couple of Site Advisor reports about other sites involved.

Check it out.

In a classic “Thank You For Smoking” spin, Zango CTO Keith Smith has responded to my post on Snopes pushing adware:
Quote:
To be sure, Snopes was pushing Zango: in exactly the same way that it continues to "push", oh, let's see, umm, QuickBooks, the Oreck Air Purifier, eBay, a call spoofing service (served up helpfully by Google), and an e-tutorial service for kids who aren't doing well in school. In other words, Snopes.com serves ads, and makes money from those ads.
This is sophistry at its best and ignores the key fact: This pop-under ad was pushed consistently (at least in my geographic region) and could have easily been turned off through the Fastclick UI. Furthermore, this was one of several pop-unders — it was not a banner ad or a Google adword (which the site has plenty of).

A line in old gangster flicks was so common in started showing up in the Looney Tunes of the late 30's/early 40's:

"I didn't do nothing. I didn't DO nothing. I didn't do NOTHING! What are hassling me for, copper? I'm TELLING you, I DIDN'T DO nothing!"

The song remains the same.... !*!*

Zango has a new video out which is trying to classify what they call 'Misfit Content'. Interesting choice of words for sure.

If there is anyone who would be an expert on misfits, it would be them. Of course, that's alot nicer than what I usually call them, low-life scumbags. But 'Low-Life Scumbag Content' just doesn't roll off the tongue as well now does it?

familyguyx.net Tells Zango To F-Off, We Don't Want Your Money
Quote:
Another news is that Zango wanted to pay us $500/day to run their software ads (we make a lot running their affiliate program $1/install), but we refused because we know it will degrade our website's experience. We can be making $8000/day just from Zango but we refuse to do so! We are not joking, FGX receives 80,000 unique visitors a day and each install is $1. At 10% conversion, we can make $8000/day. We have even disabled all Zango ads from displaying from our ads providers. In one month, we can be making $xxx, xxx, but money is not everything. We hate to see people's computers infested with spywares and adwares.

So I do hope they deliver on that promise to stop advertising Zango in March…

Zango Alleges Kaspersky Is Badware Itself
Quote:
Well ... here we go again ... MediaPost is reporting that Zango is again going after Kaspersky. Zango lost round 1 in court and they are not happy with the decision. In their latest filing (link to .pdf here) they state the Court was wrong and that Kaspersky is actually Badware (as defined in StopBadware.org) ... now that's a real stretch!

Then Zango goes on to describe Kaspersky as "Scareware" ... imagine that! this should get real interesting when Kaspersky responds ... "Microsoft Malware Protection Center" reports Zango/Hotbar ranks 3 of of the Top 10 ...

Zango's adware fox desperate to guard net henhouse

By Dan Goodin
Published Wednesday 30th April 2008

Comment Zango, creator of Hotbar, Seekmo Search Assistant and other adware programs of dubious value to end users, just can't seem to come to grips with reality. It's coughed up a $3m fine to the FTC and abandoned two lawsuits claiming anti-malware providers illegally interfered with its business after being laughed out of just about every court where it's pursued such actions.

But despite a lower-court ruling tossing out a similar suit against anti-virus provider Kaspersky, the purveyor of some of the net's most vapid and un-compelling videos and games continues to press on. Last month, it asked the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider a decision by a lower-court judge that held Kaspersky was immune from such lawsuits.

"Just as a police officer who engages in criminal activity enjoys no immunity simply because he or she has been entrusted to fight criminal activity, Kaspersky does not get a 'free pass' to engage in tortious activity merely because it sells anti-spyware software," lawyers argued.

Kaspersky sees things differently. They argue the case is important to anyone who hopes to gain the upper hand over the torrent of spyware, malware or other potentially unwanted content washing into their browsers on a daily basis.

Zango partnerships

Quote:
Anime site onepiecehq.com redirects to Zango.

However, if you cancel and then go back to the site, the Zango install magically disappears. This means that claim that you get site access for free by installing Zango is a crock (video).

Another site, userbars.org, also redirects to Zango. However, unlike onepiecehq, you apparently must install Zango to use the site.

Incidentally, there are these two Zango sites floating around, but they appear dead:

Tech Groups Back Kaspersky in Fight Against Zango

A broad coalition of technology groups today told a federal appeals court to toss out a lawsuit that adware maker Zango is continuing to pursue against computer security vendor Kaspersky Lab, arguing that to do otherwise would harm consumers and the future of the security software market.

In May 2007, Bellvue, Wash.-based Zango -- a company that makes software to serve pop-up ads and tracks users' activities on behalf of online marketers -- sued Kaspersky, charging that the company interfered with its business by removing its "adware" without first alerting the user.

In August, the judge assigned to the case dismissed Zango's suit, saying Kaspersky's actions were shielded by the federal Communications Decency Act (CDA). That law contains a "good Samaritan" clause that protects computer services companies from liability for good faith efforts to block material that users may consider objectionable (portions of the CDA have been struck down by the courts as unconstitutional, but this particular section is not one of them).

Earlier this year, Zango took its case up to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, saying Kaspersky's software should be labeled "badware" because it disabled Zango's software "without the customer's consent and without the customer's ability to override Kaspersky's invasive actions."

Well it seems our good friend Ben Edelman has been busy at work tracking everyone's fav whipping boy, Zango.

And what hath he found you say? Well I wish I could say it is something new, that Zango has moved on from it's usual SOP of pushing shitware upon users by deceptive methods and now have some for of legit business model. But then they wouldn't be able to make any money, and we all know that will never happen.

Ben documents all sorts of things which just scream " =+\ YOU FTC!"

They just keep on a rollin', reaping the benefits off of unsuspecting users, ripping off original content producers and lord knows what else.

If there is any justice this company will one day crumble to the ground and those responsible for all this nonsense will be put in jail. These low life scumbags have no ethics, integrity or morals what so ever and I for one can't wait til that day comes along.

And now, without further ado:
Debunking Zango's "Content Economy"

Quote:
Zango often touts its so-called "content economy" -- purportedly providing users access to media in exchange for accepting Zango's popup ads. After four years of debunking Zango's claims, I've come to suspect the worst -- and my investigations of Zango's media offerings confirm that Zango's media library is nothing to celebrate. This article reports the results of my recent examinations. I show:
  • Widespread copyrighted video content presented without any indication of license from the corresponding rights-holders. Details.
  • Widespread sexually-explicit material, including prominent explicit material nowhere labeled as such. Details.
  • An audio library consisting solely of prank phone calls to celebrities (without the "music" Zango promises). Details.
  • Widespread material users can get elsewhere for free, without any popups or other detriments. Details.
  • Widespread material that content creators never asked to have included in any Zango library. Details.

Another Site Hiding Pirate Movies Behind a Zango Installer Prompt
By Christopher Boydon August 15, 2008 8:44 AM
Quote:
A few days ago, I wrote about a site asking you to install Zango before you could view the site content (which happens to be pirated movies). Well, another site has come to light doing a similar thing - I'm starting to wonder how many of these are actually out there. It's also served to highlight what I feel is a particularly confusing popup box, but we'll get to that later.

Bestcinemaonline(dot)com. As you can see, the site is similar to the last one (except that site is registered anonymously to an individual in China, whereas this one is registered to someone in Indonesia). Also, the format is different - the last site was more of a "movie repository", whereas this one takes the shape and style of a blog with each individual entry pointing to a film. And what films they are!

Zango May Have Worked Things Out With The FTC, But What About The MPAA?
Quote:
We've pointed out for years the various questionable activities performed by adware firm Zango (or one of its earlier incarnations). The company has gone through so many changes it's tough to follow, but every time it insists that it has somehow "cleaned up" its act, it doesn't take long for researchers to find evidence to the contrary. For a while, the company was in hot water with the FTC for tricking people into downloading its adware. It eventually settled with the FTC, paying a hefty fine. These days, once again, the company insists that it's reinvented itself to focus on the "casual gaming market."

However, that doesn't appear to be the case. I recently saw a presentation from the company where it didn't mention casual gaming at all, but instead called itself a "publisher" of content -- though it was quite vague and evasive about just what kind of content. Perhaps that's because it doesn't want parties like the MPAA to know. As Ben Edelman had noticed a few months ago -- and now more and more security researchers are finding, Zango's software is being offered up by folks who are promising fully pirated movies.

It makes you wonder if Zango recognizes that dealing with the MPAA may be a lot less pleasant than fighting the FTC. Of course, maybe the MPAA recognizes that when pirated movies come with intrusive adware like Zango, it only gives pirated movies a bad name.

Zango And The Batman Online Videogame

Grab hold of your seats folks for another thrilling episode of Paperghost beating down another poor excuse of an affiliate in the world of Zango. Yes, imagine that Zango has an affiliate that offers some POS game to users that looks like it was designed and cobbled together using some third world software and on top of that, rips off images from other legit games.

And you thought Zango would have affiliates with all top of the line production stuff so to offer you a tremendous online gaming experience. Well, you'd be wrong. Zango don't give a rats ass as long as they can make a buck off of it. At least that's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it.

Of course, you'll only see any content on the site if you agree to the Zango install.

Notorious adware vendor Zango shuts its doors
By Gregg Keizer

April 20, 2009 (Computerworld) Zango, the adware distributor that was fined $3 million by the Federal Trade Commission in 2006 for sneaking software on people's PCs, has closed its doors.

Zango's former chief technology officer blamed the company's demise on several factors, but at the top of the list were the very practices that got it in hot water with the FTC -- and with security analysts who had labeled the company's software spyware.

"So why did Zango ultimately fail? 1: Zango screwed up its distribution," Ken Smith, a co-founder who stepped down from his CTO spot last summer, said in a long entry on his personal blog yesterday.

"Back in 2003-2005, we partnered with some people that we should never have partnered with," Smith admitted. "During that time period, my best estimate is that something like 4% of our installs during that time period were completely silent... the result of affiliates using browser security holes to install Zango's software with no knowledge or consent by the user."
